Timo Werner explains: That’s why I’m foregoing the Champions League with RB Leipzig

After his last assignment for RB Leipzig, Timo Werner interviewed the SPORTBefore moving to Chelsea, BUZZER explains why he missed the quarter-finals of the premier class with the “Red Bulls”: “Of course it hurts me that I can’t help now to do the really big thing. But I’m also a Chelsea FC player from July 1st, paid by Chelsea.”said the German international.

For Werner, who is moving to London for around 55 million euros, it was clear with regard to a possible participation in the Champions League “that all parties – Chelsea, RB and my side – should and must regulate”, said the Leipzig. “Of course I tried to stay out of the Champions League topic as much as possible because it was clear that I would have to offend one side. So my consultant ultimately coordinated it with the clubs.”

Because of the corona pandemic, UEFA postponed the Champions League knockout round until the end of the season. All games from the quarter-finals will take place in Lisbon from August 12th to 23rd. There is only one duel at a time and not the return game as usual. RB Leipzig is already qualified for the round of the best eight teams. Werner’s decision not to play for RB Leipzig in the premier class had caused criticism – among other things, at SkyExpert Dietmar Hamann: “I can’t understand why he doesn’t want to take the opportunity to win the Champions League with RB in three games”said the former Bayern player in the SPORTBUZZER-Interview.

Werner did not want to reveal whether underwriting reasons were the reason for waiving the premier class. “There were many reasons. In the end it was a joint decision by everyone involved. Not against something, but for a clear step and cut for everyone,” says Werner. “I am connected to Leipzig and RB forever, sit in front of the television at the quarter-finals and keep my fingers crossed – maybe I can even be there in Lisbon.”
