Tim Krul’s Decision to Not Participate in the World Cup: Insights from Goalkeeper Coach Hoek

Goalkeeper coach Hoek reveals: ‘Krul did not want to go to the World Cup himself’

If it had been up to Frans Hoek, Tim Krul would not have defended the goal in Andries Noppert, but in the penalty shootout of the Dutch national team against Argentina in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. The fact that Krul had canceled a goalkeeper test with the Dutch team and could therefore forget about participation in the World Cup is not correct, according to Hoek.

“Tim himself did not want to come,” says Hoek, goalkeeper coach of the Dutch team under Louis van Gaal NOS Studio Football. “Tim then called me and explained what the situation was. He thought a period of four to six weeks without his family was too long, as he had no chance to play. He just couldn’t afford to go for the penalty kicks.”

Jasper Cillessen, Mark Flokken, Remko Pasveer, Andries Noppert, Justin Bijlow and Kjell Scherpen did the goalkeeper tests. Of those six, Noppert, Pasveer and Bijlow went to Qatar, where Noppert became the first goalkeeper of the Dutch team.

‘Difficult to do exactly what is trained under pressure’

Krul was Hoek and Van Gaal’s secret weapon at the 2014 World Cup. The goalkeeper replaced Cillessen just before the penalty shootout against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals and that turned out to be a masterstroke. Krul saved two penalties and the Dutch team qualified for the semi-finals.

In Qatar, things did not end well with Noppert under the crossbar in the penalty shootout against Argentina. Noppert did not stop any of the Argentinian bets and only saw Enzo Fernández shoot wide. On behalf of the Dutch team, Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis missed.

Against the agreement

What struck Hoek was that Noppert, contrary to the agreements, dived before a shot had been taken, while the keeper would wait as long as possible for the penalty kicks. “It is very difficult to do exactly what you have trained under pressure,” Hoek explains.

If Krul had been in the World Cup selection in Qatar, he would probably have been brought in for the penalty shootouts – just like in 2014 against Costa Rica. “There’s a good chance that Krul would have been on target,” says Hoek. “In our preliminary information he came out on top.”
