Tim Cook’s Visit to China Raises Concerns About iPhone 15 Sales

KOMPAS.com – Apple CEO Tim Cook made an impromptu business visit to China on Monday (16/10/2023) this week.

Tim Cook’s visit to the “Bamboo Curtain Country” came a day after the research company Counterpoint Research claimed that the iPhone 15 was selling less well compared to the iPhone 14.

In their report, sales of the iPhone 15 in the first weeks decreased by 4.5 percent compared to the iPhone 14 in the same period.

So, because Tim Cook’s visit took place the day after this report was released to the public, many rumors claimed that the Apple CEO’s purpose in coming to China was to find out why the iPhone 15 was not selling well there.

Apart from Counterpoint Research, there is also a report from the Jefferies research institute which claims that Apple has now been replaced by Huawei as the best-selling cellphone brand in China.

In other words, it is possible that Tim Cook is worried that the iPhone 15 will not sell well in China, considering that there are several competitors who could threaten Apple’s market share in the Bamboo Curtain country.

It is not yet certain whether the rumors are true or not. However, what is clear is that in China, Cook visited an Apple Store in the Chengdu area and spoke with employees at the store.

Then, Cook also visited an elementary school in Yucheng, Chengdu to see how the school uses iPads for teaching and learning activities and supports local culture there.

Apart from that, Cook also visited a venue to watch an e-sports competition where Tencent’s popular MOBA game, namely Honor of Kings, was competed.

He also captured a number of moments in Chengdu using the iPhone 15 Pro Max and shared his activities and photos of his visit on Chinese social media, Weibo, as summarized by KompasTekno from AppleInsider, Wednesday (18/10/2023).

Regarding the iPhone 15 not selling, this may be contributed to by the many problems with the device, starting from draining the battery, heating up quickly, sound quality problems, connectivity problems, and many more.
