Video app TikTok has passed one billion monthly users worldwide. That reports parent company ByteDance in a blog post. According to the platform, most users are in the US, Europe, Brazil and Southeast Asia.

ByteDance reported on his blog that ‘more than a billion users’ visit the social medium every month. TikTok coo Vanessa publishes a video on the platform, in which she thanks TikTok users. The video platform has grown significantly during the pandemic, also notes Reuters news agency on. With its new milestone, the platform would have grown 45 percent from July 2020.

TikTok first became available in a number of countries in 2017 and was released worldwide in August 2018, following a merger with Musical.ly. In January 2018, the platform reported that it had approximately 55 million global users, Reuters writes. At the end of that year, that number rose to 271 million and by December 2019, the platform had more than half a billion active users. The app would have been downloaded two billion times a year ago, although that says nothing about the number of active users.

TikTok’s success has not gone unnoticed by other social media outlets. Several other platforms have built TikTok-like features into their own apps. Snapchat also came up with a TikTok-like last year Spotlight function.

The Chinese platform has also been discredited several times in recent years. The platform was involved in several decrees in 2019 and 2020 from the previous US President Donald Trump, who saw the app as a threat to US national security. Trump wanted, among other things, to force TikTok to open its American division would sell, on ban the app in the US if this is not met. However, the ordinances never came into effect and were eventually reversed by Joe Biden, although the current US president is also evaluating the risks of Chinese apps.

TikTok has also been discredited several times over privacy concerns. Earlier this year, the app got a fine of 750,000 euros imposed by the Dutch Data Protection Authority, because the app has violated the privacy of Dutch users by only offering the privacy statement in English. The Irish privacy regulator also has launched two investigations into the app, which respectively focus on data collection from underage TikTok users and data sharing by TikTok with China.
