Gießen / Stuttgart (dpa) – The hailstorms in recent weeks have caused twice as much damage in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria as assumed. The United Hagelversicherung announced on Monday in Giessen that it was now assuming a loss of around 20 to 23 million euros – a doubling compared to the beginning of last week. “A good 66,000 hectares were registered for regulation from June 18 to 25,” said a press release. Previously, 30,000 hectares of damaged area had been assumed.
In Baden-Württemberg, the Neckar-Alb region and two days later a strip from Freiburg via Reutlingen to Esslingen were hit hardest on June 21. On June 22nd and 24th there was damage from Lake Starnberg via Munich to Passau.
Due to their rotation and longevity, so-called super cells can cause far greater damage than ordinary thunderstorms.
The German Weather Service (DWD) expected further storms in Baden-Württemberg on Monday evening. A low from the west brings humid and thunderstorm air and causes more thunderstorms during the day and at night. Especially in the southwest, meteorologists expected heavy rain of 30 to 50 liters per square meter in a few hours, hailstones up to three centimeters in diameter and heavy gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour.
