Three sexed algae species discovered

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have made a new discovery about how the sex systems of algae work.

According to Sputnik Turkey, scientists have revealed that there is another species of algae named Pleodorina starrii, which lives in fresh waters, with a third genus other than female and male.

The gender definition of algae with both female and male reproductive organs was given the name ‘bisexual’.

COMBINES WITH OTHER SPECIES.

According to the study, the results of which were published in the journal Evolution, all three types of algae can reproduce by merging with other species. The research was carried out with algae collected from fresh waters between 2007 and 2013 by Associate Professor Hisayoshi Nozaki from the University of Tokyo.

“This finding was made possible by our long experience of going on field expeditions and our algae cultivation practices,” said Nozaki, who issued a press release on the research.

The male version of the algae was discovered by the same team in 2006. In 2010, the female version was discovered.
