Shooting Suspect Continues to Fire as Three Police Officers Are Shot

Update at 10:15 a.m.

Three police officers were shot and a suspect remains barricaded in a residence in Southeast D.C. This is an ongoing and active situation. As law enforcement continues to work towards apprehending the suspect, multiple city blocks have been shut down, resulting in lockdowns at several schools in the vicinity.

The incident started at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Hanna Place Southeast near Benning Road. Police were serving an arrest warrant for cruelty to animals when the suspect refused to come out of the home. Officers attempted to enter the residence, leading to the suspect opening fire from inside.

The Metropolitan Police Department Chief, Pamela A. Smith, urged the public to avoid the area until the suspect is apprehended. Negotiations with the barricaded suspect are currently ongoing. While the identity of the suspect remains unknown, it is possible that there are additional individuals inside the house.

Officers Expected to Survive

D.C. police have confirmed that the three officers who were shot are expected to survive their injuries. One officer was shot in the hand, while another was shot in the foot or leg. Miraculously, a third officer was struck twice, but due to their ballistic gear, the bullets were stopped. An additional officer sustained injuries but was not shot.
