Two National Guardsmen and a U.S. Border Patrol agent tragically lost their lives in a devastating helicopter crash near the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. The Department of Defense’s Joint Task Force North confirmed the incident.
A third National Guardsman also suffered injuries in the crash, joining the nation in mourning their fallen comrades.
The downed helicopter has been identified as a National Guard Lakota UH-72, according to defense officials closely following the incident.
The fatal incident occurred at around 2:50 p.m. local time on Friday while conducting aviation operations near Rio Grande City, Texas. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident, headed by JTF-N.
In a statement released on Saturday, President Joe Biden acknowledged the crash, stating that it happened during routine operations. He expressed his deep gratitude for the selfless dedication of the victims, who bravely embraced the risks associated with protecting the nation.
