Three climbers are stuck on a mountain ledge at Falketind in Sogn – NRK Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country

– It is dark and bad weather. They do not get up or down, says operations manager at the West police district, Eivind Hellesund to NRK.

The police received a message from the main rescue center at 22.34, about two girls and a boy on rock climbing who need help. The rope used by the mountain climbers has got stuck.

– They are so high up that at the moment it is not relevant to send in rescue forces on foot. So there are rescue helicopters on the way, says Hellesund.

He adds that rescue helicopters have had an overflight and looked at the weather conditions.

– The helicopter is now in Sogndal and waiting for an alpine rescue group to be flown into the area to help them down, he says.

Sleet and snow

There is low cloud cover and it has been reported that there is sleet and snow in the area.

There is poor cell phone coverage in the area.

The climbers must be at an altitude of around 15–1600 meters.

– They stand on a mountain ledge, and are dressed for this here, Hellesund says.

Which adds that they are not very experienced climbers, but they are also not completely beginners.

– But they are not equipped to be there tonight, Hellesund says.

They have reported that they are cold and wet.

It is not known how long they have been on the mountain ledge, or when they started the climb.
