Three permanent staff of the Antwerp Zoo have tested positive for Covid-19. That confirms spokeswoman Amanda Wielemans. “There is no danger to the visitors,” she emphasizes.

A Zoo staff member reported Friday that someone in her family had tested positive for the coronavirus. “As soon as she knew this, she informed us”, says Wielemans. “She was tested immediately on Friday and has not come back to work since.”

The HR department immediately contacted the other employees. “This concerns both direct colleagues who were in close contact with her and all temporary workers who worked with us in the seven days prior to the infection.”

In total, three permanent workers now appear to be infected. They show no symptoms and are quarantined at home. They are followed up by their GP. It concerns personnel who do not take care of animals. “Visitors shouldn’t have to worry either. All our employees wear a nose mask and a face shield or are separated by plexiglass, ”says Wielemans.

It is the first time since the pandemic outbreak that the Zoo has been confronted with corona infections among its staff. (dvd)
