According to this, the Bavarian State Center for New Media (BLM) can intervene as the supervisory authority for private broadcasters if it sees the diversity of information at a private broadcaster as being threatened by a shareholder.

The media group of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (85) is ProSiebenSat.1’s largest shareholder with 22 percent and wants to further increase its stake.

ProSiebenSat.1 announced on Friday that diversity of opinion and objective reporting are important pillars of democracy. “Especially in times like these, this is made all the more clear to all of us. Every measure that strengthens diversity of opinion is important and good.”

The Bavarian Media Minister Florian Herrmann (50, CSU) told the news portal “Business Insider” that with its new media law, the state wants to ensure an independent and pluralistic media landscape.

“Not least the corona pandemic and the current developments in media law in Russia show us how important media freedom and media diversity are for the functioning of our liberal western societies.”

Berlusconi announced in February that he wanted to implement long-term strategic goals by acquiring the voting rights in ProSiebenSat.1. He intends to obtain further voting rights within the next twelve months.

ProSiebenSat.1 CEO Rainer Beaujean (53) is very skeptical about the close cooperation in the television business that Berlusconi’s Mediaset group is aiming for. However, he is open to cooperation on technology and the international expansion of online shops and platforms.

But ProSiebenSat.1 wants to focus on the TV business in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and expand local content.
