Thousands of Ukrainians march for LGBT rights in Kiev

Thousands of people have joined a march for LGBTI rights in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. The parade was part of the Gay Pride in the city.

Many police were on hand to ensure that the demonstrative march proceeded peacefully. Hundreds of anti-LGBTI demonstrators had gathered in Kiev to protest the march, but there were no disturbances.

The organization reports that about 7,000 people joined the march. In 2019 there were 8,000, the largest turnout since Gay Pride in Kiev. Last year, just like in the Netherlands, the event was not held due to the corona virus.

Disapproval of homosexuality

In 2013, a gay rights march was staged for the first time in Kiev, despite protests from religious and nationalist groups in the country. In recent years, the parade has been disrupted several times by right-wing radical groups.

Homosexuality is widely frowned upon in Ukraine. A recent survey by the Ukrainian pollster Rating found that 47 percent of respondents have a negative view of the LGBTI community.

Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the workplace is prohibited, but same-sex marriage is not allowed, and same-sex couples are not allowed to adopt children.
