This rare meteor rock is older than the age of the Earth, how come?

Jakarta

In May 2020 ago, a meteor rock or meteorit fell around the Sahara desert and was discovered by scientists. After further investigation, it was concluded that the meteorite was older than the age Earth.

Researchers from the Center for Meteorite Studies at Arizona University in the United States in their study said that the space rock was formed about 4.565 billion years ago. Meanwhile, the age of the Earth is estimated to be around 4.54 billion years, which means it is slightly younger.

As quoted detikINET from Live Science, Friday (12/3/2021), its age and mineral content indicate this meteorite originated from the early formation of the Solar System, from the crust of protoplanets, a term for rocky objects that are in the process of developing into planets.

The meteorite, known as Erg Chech 002 (EC 002), probably survived a ‘baby planet’ that was damaged or swallowed up by another, larger planet during the early birth of our Solar System.

Among the thousands meteorit which fell to Earth, EC 002 is indeed classified as very special and valuable to science. “This meteorite is the oldest magmatic rock ever analyzed so far and opens up views of ancient crustal formations that line the oldest protoplanets,” said the research team.

“No object with spectral characteristics similar to EC 002 has been identified so far,” they added.

In fact, because EC 002 is older than Earth, it is possible that similar material from ancient times played a role in shaping the Earth. Then, meteorit this can be investigated further to increase understanding of the creation of our planet according to science.
