This is the state of play in the larger European football leagues NOW

The Eredivisie clubs will meet on Tuesday 7 April about the continuation of the competition and UEFA wants to play football again in the summer, but what is the current situation in the other larger leagues in Europe? An overview.

England

The Premier League will be shut down until April 30. The English FA football association intends to complete the season (with audience). “Together we hope to find a way to finish the 2019/2020 season as soon as it is safe to do so.”

“Additional space has been created on the calendar by postponing the European Championship so that we can complete national and European competitions. The health of players, staff and spectators remains our priority,” said the FA.

Germany

In the Bundesliga, the ball will certainly not roll in April. Bundesliga boss Christian Seifert announced in late March that efforts are still being made to finish the league in June. This includes contests without an audience.

According to Seifert, it is important to finish the season. He stated at a press conference that the financial damage can still be somewhat limited in this way. Some Bundesliga clubs, such as Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg, are – alternatively – already training again.

Italy

All games in Serie A until May 3 are canceled, the Italian Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora announced. He also advocated a general training ban. Some clubs wanted to resume training, but did not do so after strong criticism.

The Italian football association FIGC wants to finish the current season and hopes that football can be played again in late May or early June. Brescia already said that he is not looking forward to finishing the season. Chairman Massimo Cellino even threatens to boycott the games when they resume.

Spain

La Liga and the Spanish football association RFEF decided on March 23 to stop the competition indefinitely. The competitions will not resume until the health organizations give the green light.

“Everyone agrees that the league should be suspended until the competent authorities believe that football can be played again and health risks are eliminated,” La Liga and the Spanish Football Association RFEF write in a joint statement.

France

French Ligue 1 will also be shut down until further notice. Bernard Caiazzo, who as President of the Premiere Ligue represents the interests of the Ligue 1 clubs, said to France Bleu that there will be no football until June 15.

Caiazzo expects that the competition will still be played. “It is imperative that the league be completed, even if it means that the season will not be finished until July or August. All clubs are now losing about EUR 250 million a month in total and we cannot play as long as everything is under control.”

Belgium

The Jupiler Pro League will most likely not be resumed. The board of directors of organizer Pro League advised in early April to stop the season and to declare league-leader Club Brugge as champion.

The advice is yet to be ratified on April 15 at a general meeting of all clubs. It is not yet clear what will happen with the cup final, promotion / relegation and European football tickets, the Pro League said in a statement.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • The corona measures have resulted in an infected person infecting less than one other person on average. Previously, this so-called reproduction number was between two and three.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
