The cholesterol application for quick diagnostics is called smartCARD. This app was developed by David Erickson, who is a professor of mechanical engineering at Cornell University.
Reporting from Asme, Wednesday (12/15/2021), smartCARD optically detects biomarkers in a drop of blood, sweat, or saliva.
“The app will then differentiate the results using color analysis. This test takes about a minute from when someone puts a drop of blood on a test strip,” says Erickson.

When the user puts a drop of blood on the cholesterol test strip, the blood will be processed through separation steps and chemical reactions. The strips are then ready for calorimetric analysis by the HP application.
“The advantage of doing this over the phone is convenience and ease of use. Everyone already knows how to use a smartphone,” explains Erickson.
The smartCARD device clamps the phone’s camera. Its built-in flash provides a uniform, diffused light to illuminate a test strip compatible with smartCARD readers. The app on the phone then calibrates the hue saturation to the color value of the image on the cholesterol test strip.
The results will appear via HP. This is the result of Erickson’s collaboration with nutritional scientists, electrical engineers, and bioengineers. He said that the device he made had accurate results.
