This is how these pieces of sacred art from the exceptional Granada School of Sculpture recover their original polychrome

A total of eight projects in the province of Granada have been beneficiaries of line 1 of the subsidies to sacred art, aimed at the restoration and conservation of religious goods, and will receive aid for just over 137,000 euros. The Ministry of Culture and Historical Heritage co-finances up to 80% of the total cost of the works with a limit of 30,000 euros per project. You will notice these help the mural paintings of the Chapel of San Miguel, of the Church of San Miguel Bajo; the main altarpiece of the Abadía del Sacromonte; the Christ of Patience, of the Chapel of the Hospital of San Rafael and the images of San Blas and the Child, of the Parish of Víznar; San Miguel Arcángel, from the Parish of the Assumption of Cúllar-Vega as well as the Virgin of Peace and the Christs of Health and Expiration.

The territorial delegate for Culture and Historical Heritage, Antonio Granados, has visited the restoration workshop where three of the eight projects benefiting from the aid to sacred art of the Ministry of Culture and Historical Heritage in Granada. These are the images of the Virgin of Peace, of the Brotherhood of Favors; the Cristo de la Salud, the Church of San Andrés; and of the Christ of the Expiration, of the Parish of San Pedro and San Pablo de Granada. Some images that “have received aid worth 13,096.56 euros, 12,399.91 euros and 9,183.79 euros respectively, amounts to which they will add the 20% contributed by religious entities”, the delegate highlighted.

Granados has been very satisfied to see how advanced the work is in the images and has stressed that it is “three valuable works of the Granada School, which reflect the transition of sculpture from the Renaissance, with the Cristo de la Salud, attributed to Diego de Siloé, to the Baroque of the Virgen de la Paz, attributed to Diego de Mora, passing through the naturalism of the Cristo de la Expiración , attributed to Pablo de Rojas, an image that presides over the tabernacle of the Church of San Pedro y San Pablo and the work with the highest score in all of Andalusia in the call for sacred art grants due to its great artistic value ”.

Similarly, Antonio Granados highlighted the “boost that this new line of grants has given to the recovery of significant pieces of sacred art, which is very important to restore splendor to the heritage of Granada, a city that largely lives off the tourism and its traditions ”.

During his visit, Granados has been accompanied by Francis Almohaya, of the Association of Friends of San Andrés, and Alberto ortega, secretary of the Brotherhood of Christ the Favors, who have thanked the Ministry for granting these grants for the recovery of these pieces. Likewise, both have been satisfied with the work carried out in the Claverestaura workshop, in charge of the restoration and conservation project of the pieces, as well as the investigations that are being carried out.

Dionisio Olgoso, who directs Claverestaura, has explained the intervention of the Virgen de la Paz, a work to which “after the cleaning tests and sampling of tastings to determine the existence of original polychromy and, having confirmed its existence”, the “elimination of repainting and recovery of the original coloring by combining the chemical method supported with the manual at the point of a scalpel ”. Thus, Olgoso has highlighted the “recovery of a beautiful blue cloak on the dress richly decorated in gold and silver on a background of a luminous red”. At present, “the stuccoing of the polychrome faults has begun, which will later be chromatically reintegrated”, he specified.

As in the Virgen de la Paz, it is confirmed, after sampling of tastings and stratigraphic study, that the Christ of the Expiration “It has a rough repaint that covers the entire surface of the sculpture. Thus, after fixing the polychromy, we have proceeded to remove the layers of white repaint from the purity cloth to recover the gilding with stew. The result is very satisfactory, recovering more than 90% of the browning with original cooking. In the carnations, after carrying out small tastings and verifying the generalized existence of the original stratum, we have already begun to open them in size in order to gradually recover the original polychrome, although we are in an incipient phase ”, highlighted the team director, who points out that they are beginning with the Christ of Health, who is in a similar situation.
