They grope alongside their parents, often do not understand what is going on around them, and have now fallen victim to a cynical political dispute between Turkey and the EU: the refugee and migrant children in Edirne in the border triangle Turkey – Bulgaria – Greece. We meet them all the time: sleeping on the ground when they wait with their family to cross the Evros border river. In Edirne’s tent camp, where they try to warm themselves up around the campfire with their siblings. Or at the Pazarkule border crossing, when they run after their parents with blankets in their hands. There are dozens. Even the Turkish authorities do not know the exact number.

Since Turkish President Erdoğan declared on February 28 that he would no longer prevent migrants from crossing the border, thousands of people have been trying to get to Greece. Hundreds again crowded on the Turkish side at the border fence on Saturday. Again teardrop and flue grenades flew on both sides. In between the children. If the parents break through to the Greek side, they are arrested and sent back to Turkey through a border gate. Dozens of refugees tell us that they include pregnant women and families.

Greece suspended asylum law on Monday. The following day, the EU Commission President flew across the border region in a helicopter and announced: “We will keep our position.” Want to station Evros to prevent Greece from sending refugees and migrants back.
