To get rid of the local villagers, the Portuguese hydroelectric company EDP began negotiations. At first, the majority of the people living in Aceredo were not interested in leaving their homes. Several other residents agreed to see the compensation obtained. The tough negotiations were claimed to be able to free up the land of 51 percent of the area’s population. The rest were taken by force. Residents who refused made various efforts, ranging from demonstrations, hunger strikes, to confrontations with the police.
