A recent study published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B revealed that the Pacific Lingcod gains and loses an average of 20 teeth each day.
“If that happened to humans, it would mean that every day all of our teeth would be replaced with new ones,” said Adam Summers, professor of biology at the University of Washington.
The rate of this Pacific Lingcod tooth replacement really surprised the researchers. The Pacific lingcod belongs to a unique group of fish. For example anglerfish that grow teeth on their foreheads, or piranhas, which can lose a quarter of their teeth at once.
“The uniqueness of their Lingcod is that they can change teeth very quickly,” explained Karly Cohen, a PhD student at the University of Washington who was also involved in the research.
Pacific lingcods are commonly found on the west coast of North America, from Alaska to Baja California, Mexico. Economically, the fish is important to fishermen because it is used as a taco meal in Mexico.
According to Adam, as a voracious hunter, Lingcod eats anything that can be put in its mouth.
