The poll values of the ÖVP are as high as 50 years ago. An absolute is even possible. The Chancellor does not want to know anything about elections.
Nevertheless, the popularity ratings of Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) continue to rise. At the same time, his party is also advocated by more and more Austrians. In ZiB2, moderator Armin Wolf said that the People’s Party was already scratching the absolute majority. Then he asked directly whether he could rule out that there will be new elections this year.
“Would make decisions again in the same way”
The Chancellor immediately answered the question: “That is absurd, Mr. Wolf!” He does not know who is currently interested in the survey values. “After getting up, I’m only interested in the number of new infections,” says Kurz, and he is happy that the number continues to decrease. He clarified: “There is no reason to think about new elections”.
He also does not want to think about whether the measures that were taken were correct or not. So it is still far away from the feared 100,000 deaths that the Chancellor assumed a few weeks ago. “I had to fight with very different opinions from different experts,” explains the ÖVP boss. However, he was glad that the flattening of the curve worked faster than expected. “I would make the same decisions again. It was right that we reacted that way.” That is also the reason why you can now start up faster than other countries.
He admits to Wolf that at the beginning of the crisis he might have mispronounced his words. He described all people who would compare the coronavirus with the flu as “stupid”. However, he emphasizes that he was emotional himself. The comparison frightened him, which is why slips happened to him in the heat of the moment.
