Thionville. A program for perpetrators of domestic violence

Among the accommodation and integration missions handled by the Est Accompaniment association, since 1is September 2020, in addition to a support program for victims, a second dedicated more particularly to perpetrators of domestic violence.

As regards the victims, a whole reconstruction path is proposed. Sport, interviews with a clinical psychologist, sophrology… The opportunity to start a long-term work. For the author program, “previously, this mission was assumed by Estiv”, specifies Mélanie Vargiu, clinical psychologist on behalf of the association.

“It is necessary to specify, with regard to the author program, that it intervenes in cases where violence is reported to justice for the first time, that it is a conflict within a couple and that they remain light. There is no minimization, but there is no injury or homicide. A probationary obligation can then be decided by the public prosecutor as an alternative to prosecution or as part of a probationary follow-up… ”

Two days and four modules

Thus, this program comes in two stages. “First, there is an interview with a psychologist to assess the person and see what may have happened, if the facts are recognized. “

Then, it is the internship itself. “It is divided into four modules. The first, with the deputy prosecutor, concerns the legislative aspect. The second is interested in children, even more if there were any present at home during the episode of violence. It addresses the issue of trauma. “

The second day is devoted to “group dynamics”. The idea being to bring together several authors with two animators in order to approach the facts “without being judged, to verbalize what happened, to take a step back, to hear from other authors to put oneself back in question. “

The last module, finally, is centered on “self-esteem. We must not stay in the pattern of perpetrator of violence and ask the right questions. “

A program disrupted by the pandemic

The months of health crisis did not really reduce the number of beneficiaries of the East Accompaniment program. “The November containment slowed down the work, but we were still able to maintain the internships. Since then, we have managed to move forward and we are almost in balance when it comes to the files, even if there are always so many. Without counting the individual courses, during the three groups organized between November and January, 45 people went through this author program. “
