Around four in the morning they concentrated on two points. A gas station of the Countess and another located in the city hall Gustavo A. Madero. They did not know who the target was, some of them later stated. They had been told that it was a suicide mission: they were offered payments of up to 100,000 pesos, as well as taking care of their families.
As he usually does Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the assassins were recruited in various parts of the country. Chihuahua, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Guerrero and Jalisco -specifically Vallarta Port. There was even a Colombian.
These never knew where they were. For three weeks they had been arriving in groups to Mexico City. Some arrived the night before the attack. El Vaca, who for a long time acted alongside Carlos Fernando Huerta, El Viejón – involved in the execution, in July 2019, of two Israelis in Plaza Artz – is in charge of receiving groups of hitmen in Puerto Vallarta who later become trained in the mountains. Moreno Pinzón, El Tarjetas, is the operational leader of the Jalisco Cartel in the Guadalajara metropolitan area. His stronghold, however, is in Vallarta.
The secretary of Citizen Security of Mexico City, Omar García Harfuch, He has had conflicts with the Vallarta group since he was head of the Criminal Investigation Agency.
In February 2018, for example, two elements of the AIC were detected in Puerto Vallarta. They were “lifted”, recorded on their knees, forced to read a “confession”, and then tortured and executed. Their bodies were found on the 15th of that month in Xalisco, Nayarit.
García Harfuch ordered a mega-operative in response: 40 AIC agents dripped into Vallarta, posing as tourists. Through surveillance cameras, they discovered that the deputy director of the municipal police and one of his elements had handed the officers over to hitmen from the Jalisco Cartel: 39 days later, 18 members of the CJNG were detained by the PGR, including the then-chief square, Mauricio Valera Reyes, El Manotas.

The magnitude of resources that the hired assassins had shed light on the costs of the operation: 13 vehicles, some of them armored; 5 Barrett rifles, one grenade launcher, 34 long weapons, 8 short ones, 7 grenades, 96 magazines and 39 vests. The gunmen also carried 51 Molotov bombs. The idea was to riddle and then set fire to the secretary’s truck.
An outpost of the cartel, made up of low-profile youth, established García Harfuch’s routes, schedules and vulnerable points.
At 3:26 on Friday, two of the vehicles involved in the attack were recorded by cameras on Valle Hermoso Street, in Valle de Aragón. At 3:31 the vehicles ran along the streets of the Gustavo A. Madero city hall.
It is believed that the weapons were kept in a warehouse of this last mayor’s office. Right there they reinforced with metal sheets the pickup truck that then closed the way to the secretary’s vehicle.
The Security Secretary’s unit was surrounded by two vehicles. The assassins shot him head-on, to immobilize the engine. At the same time, he was attacked from other vehicles from the sides. The bullets were used to defeat the armor. García Harfuch’s chief of escorts received 38 hits. More than 400 rounds of cartridges were collected at the scene.
The attackers did not have time to set the van on fire: the rapid police response prevented them.
El Vaca fell in Tláhuac, along with the woman in charge of the safe houses and providing the hired assassins with pantries. Those who had guarded the García Harfuch route were later detained in Atlacomulco, thanks to an alert launched by C5. “They no longer brought anything on the phones,” according to a source.
