They sold a sculpture for a record 65 million pounds – 2024-04-16 11:38:22

A bronze sculpture of a man by Alberto Giacometti was sold for a world record price of 65 million pounds, the BBC reported.

With a starting price of 12 million pounds, bidders for the life-size work were outbid in just eight minutes to the record price. This happened yesterday at the Sotheby’s auction house.

The sculpture – The Man Who Walks is considered one of the Swiss sculptor’s most valuable works of the 20th century. It was originally expected to fetch a maximum of £18 million, but ten bidders doggedly upped the ante until the hammer hit the record sum.

According to the editor of the “Izkustvo” newspaper, the price reached is so high because Giacometti’s sculptures are few in number and very rarely offered at auction. The previous record for an art object was held by Pablo Picasso’s Boy with the Pipe, which sold in 2004 at an auction in New York for $104,168,000 (£58,520,830).
