MEPs of different political tendencies expressed this Thursday their solidarity with the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, due to the diplomatic crisis arising from the assault on the Mexican embassy ordered by the government of Ecuador.
“In these difficult times, we want to show all our solidarity and support in the face of the serious events that occurred last Friday, April 5 (…), in an unprecedented violation of the norms that establish diplomatic relations and in a frontal attack on Mexican sovereignty “, underlines the letter addressed to the president by 16 members of the European Parliament.
That day, the Ecuadorian police broke into the embassy to arrest the former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas, who was a refugee there and with an asylum motivated by the political and judicial persecution he is suffering.
The signatories of the letter, an initiative of Spanish MEP Manu Pineda (Left Group) described the politician’s arrest as illegal.
Likewise, they affirmed that they knew and valued the important role that Mexico has historically played and currently plays as defender of International Law, diplomatic relations, and particularly the figures of asylum and refuge. “We sincerely recognize the defense that your government has made in recent years of diplomacy as a way to resolve conflicts. That is why we want to convey our firm condemnation of the decision of the Ecuadorian government chaired by Daniel Noboa to order the assault on the Mexican embassy,” they added.
In addition to Pineda, the parliamentarians of the Left Group Maria Eugenia Rodríguez, Sandra Pereira, Marc Botenga, Leila Chaibi, Idoia Villanueva, Miguel Urbán and Esther Sanz, of the Greens Ana Miranda, Tilly Metz and Jordi Solé, and the unregistered Massimiliano Smeriglio.
It was also signed by Leopoldo López (European People’s Party), Maria Soraya (Renew Europe), Javi López (Socialists and Democrats) and Mónica Silvana González (Socialists and Democrats).
Regarding recent events, they expressed concern about the consequences of this violation of International Law for relations between Latin American countries and between them and the European Union (EU). “We are living in very complicated times in international relations and we consider that the violation of basic norms of diplomatic relations, such as the inviolability of diplomatic premises and personnel, carried out by the Noboa government generates a dangerous precedent in an international community in need of the defense of International Law for peaceful coexistence,” they warned.
We would also like – the letter sent to López Obrador continues – to convey our support and understanding for the difficult decision you have made to break diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
Several of the MEPs, also at the initiative of Pineda, signed another letter addressed to the high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, whom they urged to request the Ecuadorian government for safe conduct that would allow former vice president Glas to continue the asylum process granted by Mexico.
Likewise, they asked him to give instructions to the Delegation of the European External Action Service in Ecuador to activate all the necessary mechanisms for permanent follow-up and monitoring of the case and to visit Glas in prison to learn first-hand about his situation.
