MEXICO CITY
The Monterrey bear, whose selfie circulates on social networks, will be transferred to the Chihuahua mountains, after it was castrated to prevent its reproduction, revealed Griselda Garza, in charge of the Profepa office in Nuevo León.
In an interview with local media, he explained that the decision to release him in another state is due to how dangerous his approach to inhabited areas is.
He indicated that the male specimen was castrated to prevent its reproduction and “genetic contamination” of the species that exists in Chihuahua.
He explained that this decision was made from the central offices of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), in Mexico City.
“Because there is another species of black bear in the Sierra de Chihuahua, genetic contamination should be avoided, that is, the crossing of different species, genetic mixtures, thus avoiding displacement in search of females,” he said.
He added that bear number 34 from Parque Chipinique was fitted with a telemetry collar to monitor its movements.
