/ world today news/ Did you all hear and see how yesterday Rumen Radev expressed hope that the BSP should fulfill its mandate in accordance with the Constitution? Not a single media outlet failed to repeat the one sentence that the microphones extracted from the president – as usual out of context of the event in which he was participating. That is why they had gathered at the Garrison shooting range – cameras, microphones, cameras, telephones – not to honor and reflect the 80th anniversary of the shooting of Nikola Vaptsarov and his five comrades, executed on July 23, 1942, but to Svilenski and Vigenin, the only representatives of the BSP’s upper division, wrung out some sensationalism about the saga with the creation of the new government.
The leading TV stations and some newspapers on the way mentioned with half a word where they were and that was it. Only BNT released one phrase from the president’s speech, several websites quoted him.
And it’s not like they didn’t have information. BTA correctly and with many photos publicized the commemoration of the tragic anniversary, the speech of President Radev and the speech of the chairman of BSP – Sofia Ivan Takov. But he did not indicate that the organizers of the commemorative rally were the Bulgarian Anti-Fascist Union and the capital organization of the left party. Nor did he note the introductory speech of the chairman of BAS, Evgeny Beliy. And what Maya Vaptsarova said about freedom as a dimension of the spirit. Anyway, the media had information that they did not “notice” and did not publicize. Doesn’t a genius poet of Bulgaria, who was shot because of his convictions and ideals, who bet his head for his country and his people and accepted death with a song, deserve to be honored with at least a few minutes of television time? 80 years after the fascist attack on the Garrison shooting range, we have seen far-right revanchists make fun of a great feat, to deny the very existence of fascism in our country, to ban the word anti-fascism!
But I wonder most of all who today has the power and the ability to forbid the media to mention the speech of the president of the republic and thus censor him? Or is it a case of universal self-censorship in times when the rehabilitation of fascism has become state policy, and national heroes do not fit into the orders of the new Big Brother?
And since few Bulgarians heard what the president said, let’s repeat his heretical words:
“The poet survived all attempts of mediocrity to cast a shadow on his poetic talent. That is why his poems do not grow old, while those of his detractors burden only their own consciences. The anti-fascist Vaptsarov is a martyr to a cause that in recent years the new revisionists are trying to erased from our history. That’s why the vandalism against the anti-fascist monuments,” Radev said in his speech. And more: “When the old demons rise up everywhere in the world, it is important to honor those who spared no effort in the fight against fascism, who died for freedom and dreamed of justice. Even women and children and thousands of people with dignity. Nikola Vaptsarov is the clearest example of the tragedy of how we kill talent and persecute even memory.
You see, for almost a century, Nikola Vaptsarov’s poems did not grow old, and the memory of him and his bright talent survived all the attempts of the mediocrity of the political conjuncture. It should be clear that anti-fascism is an important part of Bulgaria’s sacred past, and anyone who denies it opens the way to new historical divisions and tragedies. Therefore, to preserve the memory of those who died in the fight against fascism in 1925, of the thousands who died at the front in the last phase of the Second World War, of the sacrifice of all these people – this is our civic and human duty. In this battle of terror against the ideal, of mediocrity against the ideal, the spirit that survives violence and obscurantism invariably wins. Tribute to the innocent victims and righteous fighters against fascism.”
Yes, Vaptsarov is not a convenient example of the “new old demons” and that is why they encroached on the president’s right to address his people freely. They do not risk their lives for the Motherland, they seek, as always, help from it and from the external forces that destroy it. Vaptsarov’s genius, Vaptsarov’s poems, are a bitter rebuke to their Bulgaria, not ours, today.
