They agree in favor of the rights of Dominicans

A few days after the general election in the Dominican Republic, the overseas deputy for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Adelys Olivares, and José Rodríguez, president of the Dominican Human Rights Committee, yesterday announced a collaboration agreement to ensure the rights of the Quiche community on the island.

Up to 38,000 Dominicans in the country are eligible to vote in the general election on Sunday, July 5. Olivares has been a deputy for the past four years, although always in the minority, and Luis Abinader, candidate for the presidency by the PRM, is at the forefront in the polls.

As an overseas deputy, Olivares has the responsibility of representing Dominicans of the diaspora, divided between Florida, Puerto Rico and 28 countries, in the Chamber of Deputies.

“We are going to work on an agreement to defend the human rights of Dominicans. Until now, there had been no agreement between the deputation with the Committee, ”Olivares said in an interview with El Nuevo Día.

When asked how, specifically, this agreement advances the cause of Dominicans in Puerto Rico, Olivares replied: “We are going to work on projects together, both through the Chamber of Deputies and with them (Dominican Human Rights Committee) too”.

Olivares was a vocal during the judicial process that faced the Dominican citizen Aida de Los Santos in Puerto Rico, who was accused of the murder of Georgina Ortiz Ortiz and was later acquitted in 2013.

As recently as April, Olivares submitted a resolution in the Chamber of Deputies to recommend to President Danilo Medina the inclusion of the Dominican diaspora in his government’s aid program to address the crisis caused by the COVID-19. It was not immediately possible to confirm whether that measure was approved.

For his part, Rodríguez rejected that the signing of the collaborative agreement is a mere electoral move directed at Olivares gaining supporters in Puerto Rico. “She will definitely have to execute, but we have other people close to Abinader, and he agrees with the initiative,” he said.

“With her, we have had a good relationship before, as was the case with Doña Aida (De Los Santos), and we received her support. It is not the first time that we do joint work, but now it has been formalized, “added the Dominican leader on the island, assuring that a similar pact proposed to Medina was rejected.

Voting on the island

Dominicans registered to vote may exercise their right to vote, on July 5, at the Roberto Clemente (San Juan) and Guillermo Angulo (Carolina) Coliseums, the Onofre Carballeira (Bayamón) complex, the Antonio R. Barceló Coliseum (Toa Baja ), the Ángel O. Berríos complex (Caguas), the Monteverde sector court, in Canóvanas, and the Dominican Consulate, in Mayagüez.
