Like every other year since the advent of smartphones, in 2021 we all spend too much time looking at apps. Now at least we have some data telling us which apps were the most popular during the year that is ending.
The analysis company Apptopia This week released its annual ranking of app downloads to close the year, and to be honest, there aren’t many surprises. It turns out that the apps that are talked about the most are also the ones that are downloaded the most.
For clarity, this data includes both iOS and Android downloads.

Again, there is nothing particularly surprising about this list. The fact that TikTok is the top app of 2021 with 656 million downloads is a no-brainer, while most of the rest are mainstays like Facebook, Snapchat, and Spotify. The only one that stands out is CapCut, a standalone video editing app that some TikTok users use to cut their videos before posting them to the TikTok app. Who is the owner of CapCut? Yes, it is ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok.
