These are the reasons why the District considers the first peak over

The Mayor’s Office of Barranquilla, through the District Health Secretariat released an analysis of the numbers of deaths from Covid-19, and other pathologies in the last week, and reported that since last August 10 the reports of the National Institute Health shows a number below 6.

According to the official national data of the Unique Registry of Affiliations and Deaths – RUAF-, on average, in the last five years, 20 people die a day from natural, non-violent deaths in the city of Barranquilla. The minimum average per day is 16 deaths, and the maximum is 22.

The Crisis manager, Juan Manuel Alvarado, explained that in Barranquilla, since last March, the number of deaths due to natural death is being monitored, an important indicator because it tells in real time at what point in the curve the city is.

“In Barranquilla, on a normal day, they die of natural causes; that is, excluding current deaths, between 14 and 22 people, an indicator that changed a bit and we reached the so-called peak between mid and late June. During the last 3 weeks we again had days where the indicator was located in this historical average between 14 and 22, but it was during the last 7 days that there was no excess of natural deaths, this is important because again it highlights the moment in which finds the city, we can say that we managed to overcome the first peak of the pandemic, that the city is already in a new stage of economic reactivation and that public health indicators support us in this type of decision ”.

Chronology of the figures

The analysis reports that, since last June 1, 2020, the District passed the normal variable, exceeding the historical limits that day with a figure of 37 deaths; that is, an excess in the maximum number of deaths per day registered in the last 5 years.

On June 18, 2020, the highest excess was reported, exceeding the figure of 60 daily deaths in the city due to natural, non-violent deaths, including Covid-19.

Since that date, the decrease has been presenting slowly until July 20, the date on which for the first time during the Covid-19 emergency, the average number of frequent deaths in the last five years was reached for the city of Barranquilla.

From there, deaths maintain a sustained downward trend, varying between the historical minimum and maximum limits, without reaching numbers as high as those reported in June during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Barranquilla, in line with the trend of the other public health indicators, since Monday, August 10, reports a stability in the number of deaths per day due to natural death, achieving eight days in a row to date, a report without excesses in fatality .

The District reiterated the self-care recommendations for citizens to win the battle against the coronavirus, especially the use of a mask, covering the nose and mouth; permanent hand washing with sufficient soap and water; cleaning and disinfection of surfaces in the home and office, and do not forget the physical distance of at least one meter between people.

The report of the National Institute of Health (INS) shows that in Barranquilla there are 34,316 positive cases, 1,576 deaths and 28,939 people recovered.

The drop in cases has allowed the availability of ICU beds to be 50%. To date, the occupancy of intensive care units is 23%, which is equivalent to 292 occupied beds.

Other pathologies are occupying 27% of ICUs, which is equivalent to 379 people. In total, the installed capacity is 671 ICU beds.
