These are the 63 municipalities in Spain with more than 100,000 inhabitants that could increase restrictions due to the coronavirus

Madrid has imposed common sense to a government that had the capital of Spain in its sights. Not only the community is at risk from the increase in coronavirus cases, a total of 63 municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants have equal or higher rates in terms of infection indicators. With fewer inhabitants, the Ministry of Health, led by Salvador Illa, will let the autonomous communities set their own criteria for control or restrictions. After several weeks of disputes between Madrid and the ministry, some necessary common criteria will finally be imposed.

The central government starts the house on the roof and is late in trying to keep the structure standing. The precipitous de-escalation without any kind of guideline to apply has ended up being the main problem when it comes to seeing infections grow. After a few months in which they have tried to blame the autonomous communities for their lack of control, Madrid has achieved that the central government is able to set common criteria. Months after the de-escalation, it puts on the table an action plan that should be ready from day one. Madrid will be accompanied by another 63 municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

This Wednesday the Interterritorial Health Council will impose measures to limit mobility, capacity and hours to these cities that comply with the indicators that put the Ministry of Health on alert. Common criteria for mobility restrictions will apply when:

  • A cumulative incidence of more than 500 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants in a period of fifteen days is reached. Maintaining or exceeding this figure.
  • A positivity greater than 10% in the PCRs that are carried out in the massive screenings that are applied by neighborhoods and areas.
  • An occupancy rate above 35% in ICUs at the regional level. The health pressure will begin to be worrying, although the figures for last March should not be reached in any case.

These three conditions are what will determine the restrictions that must be applied uniformly throughout the territory and not only in Madrid. In this way a control will begin to be carried out that should have been carried out as soon as the de-escalation started. The 63 municipalities comply with all three and, therefore, will be subject to the same rules.
