Old Town and Munster
The Freiburg Minster is the symbol of the city and a must for every visitor. The Catholic Church was first designed in the Romanesque style, then completed with Gothic and Flamboyant Gothic elements. As if by a miracle, the Freiburg Minster was spared during the world wars and represents around 800 years of city history. The surrounding old town, on the other hand, was largely destroyed and rebuilt with great attention to detail.

The Freiburg «Bächle»
A typical feature of the old town are the “Bächle”: The small water channels were created when the city was founded in the 12th century to supply water. In addition to drinking water for daily use, they also supplied extinguishing water for the surrounding shops. Today they give the city center its individual character and provide pleasant refreshment in the summer months. But watch out: If you are single and accidentally step into a Bächle, according to tradition, you should marry someone from Freiburg.
–
Tip: When the weather is good, there are vendors at the Bächle who specialize in small wooden boats with leashes for children. There is now even a Bächle boat race.
–
Schauinsland
The Schauinsland is the local mountain of the city of Freiburg. The name says it all: from the 1283 meter high summit you can see far across the Breisgau to France (a cable car takes you up). Various hiking and cycling trails lead from the Schauinsland car park through the beautiful Black Forest landscape. You can choose between various levels of difficulty (depending on the incline). Mountain bikers will also find the ideal slope on the Schauinsland.
–
Tip: In addition to hiking and adventure tips, the Schauinslandbahn website also offers a live camera to check the weather conditions. So you can plan the perfect time to visit.

The Günterstal
The Günterstal district is located south of the city and is known for its meadows and fields. If you want to take a walk from the city, start at Hans-Thoma-Strasse in the district of Wiehre, which is also worth a visit with its picturesque old villas. From here the path leads through the countryside, along the course of the Bohrerbach. Those who hike to Günstertal will also pass the pretty St. Lioba Monastery with its Tuscan-style gardens.
–
Tip: If you want to stop off at the restaurant after the hike and taste a traditional Baden tarte flambée, the St. Valentin forest restaurant is the place for you.
–
The cycle path on the Dreisam
The Dreisam is the river that flows through Freiburg and also feeds the famous Bächle. If you follow its course, a beautiful cycle path leads out of the city into the green countryside with its vineyards. You can cycle from the city center either north-west (Umkirch) or south-east (Kirchzarten). The slope is easy to manage in most places and also suitable for children.
–
Tip: If you don’t mind the distance, you can drive to the Mundenhof. Here livestock and domestic animals from all over the world are presented in a zoo.
–
The Sea Park
The Seepark is located in the Betzenhausen district of Freiburg. The site covers a total of 35 hectares and was created in 1986 as an area for the State Horticultural Show. The on-site lake is approximately ten hectares in size and offers plenty of space for walking, swimming, canoeing or stand-up paddling. In summer, the students of the surrounding student settlement cavort on the extensive meadows on the shore. Don’t miss: The Japanese Garden, which was laid out on the western side of the site.
–
The Feldberg
The Feldberg is one of the most popular destinations in Freiburg and the surrounding area, especially in winter. At 1493 meters it is the highest mountain in Baden-Württemberg and also the highest mountain in Germany beyond the Alps. In summer you can take the cable car to the summit and hike. From the top you have a great panoramic view over the surrounding valleys. In winter, the Feldberg turns into a popular ski resort with 28 lifts for alpine and cross-country skiing.

Tip: If you want to experience a museum with a difference, you can visit the Black Forest Ham Museum on the neighboring mountain, the Seebuck – and taste some delicious chickpeas.
