Vivo Apex 2020 concept smartphone

With their annual concept smartphone, Chinese telephone manufacturer Vivo shows its vision of the future. So as many new gadgets as possible are put into the smartphone. With the Vivo Apex 2020, Vivo focuses primarily on the cameras, but it also adds some other interesting things. These are the 5 best to look forward to in future smartphones.

1: Gimbal stabilization in camera

Many cameras in smartphones use optical image stabilization (ois). The camera therefore has some room for maneuver to absorb vibrations from your hand. This produces quieter film images and reduces the chance of motion blur while taking a photo.

This stabilization works if you move from top to bottom or from left to right. As soon as you tilt the phone, it cannot compensate. This requires a gimbal, which means that the camera can move on more axes. A well-known gimbal for smartphones is the DJI Osmo, with which you get stable images while filming freehand.

Vivo has built this technology into the camera module of their Apex 2020. Such smooth images as a gimbal on a tripod will not produce it, but the extra room for movement for the built-in camera will hopefully lead to slightly better photos and videos.

2: “Real” optical zoom

Smartphone manufacturers nowadays screen with optical zoom in their cameras. In many cases this involves an extra camera with a fixed focal point. Zoomed images are made with this camera, if no zoom is required, the normal camera turns on.

Vivo promises to have a real optical zoom lens in its camera with which you can actually zoom in and out. Therefore, the zoom can vary from 5x to 7.5x. Even during filming, you can continuously zoom in and out without losing focus, Vivo promises.

Mechanisms to enable optical zoom take up a lot of space. Samsung proved that years ago, when they made a Samsung Galaxy S4 with a 10x optical zoom lens. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom was enormously thick through the lens.

3: 60 Watt wireless charging

Just like the previous Vivo concepts, this device does not have any ports that plugs can use. Charging can only be done wirelessly. That goes really fast because of the high wattage with which the battery can charge. 60 watts is a speed that many fast chargers do not reach today.

For comparison, the Realme X50 Pro that recently came out, was astonished by the fact that a 65 Watt fast charger was included. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Charges with a maximum of 45 Watt, but has a 25 Watt fast charger included. So Vivo achieves 60 watts without needing a cable. An empty 2000 mAh battery is therefore fully charged again in 20 minutes

4: Selfie camera behind the screen

With a screen that fills the entire front of the phone, there is no room for the selfie camera. Vivo solved that two years ago in their Vivo Apex 2018 concept smartphone by putting the camera in a slide-out mechanism, something that we later saw in, for example, the Huawei P Smart Z or the Oppo Find X.

In this case Vivo opts for a selfie camera under the screen. This too will almost certainly be copied. Several manufacturers, including Samsung, are working on this. Oppo and Xiaomi showed halfway through last year working concepts the camera being processed under the screen. We are waiting for the first manufacturer to actually put it on the market.

5: Screen that bends 120 degrees over the edges

Perhaps not very new, but responsible for the futuristic appearance of the phone, the 6.45-inch screen bends over the edges on the side. Something that Samsung showed years ago with them Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. With the current advance of flexible screens it is not surprising that we encounter this more often.

Because the screen bends over the side there is no room for buttons. Just like in the Vivo Nex 3, the device therefore has pressure-sensitive parts in the screen, which serve as an on-off button and volume control.

Vivo Apex 2018 and 2019

The display of a concept telephone is now an annual tradition of Vivo. In 2018 they showed the Vivo Apex 2018, the front of which was 98 percent screen. This phone came later as the Vivo Nex on the market.

Last year the company showed a telephone without buttons and ports with the Vivo Apex 2019, which completely closed the housing. Also new was the fact that the entire screen could serve as a fingerprint scanner, something that later came back in the Vivo X20 Plus.
