There’s a Black Shadow on Planet Earth’s Photo, What Phenomenon Is This?

WHAT have you ever been photo bomb from friend? Usually, this happens when you’re ready to be styled to be photographed, but suddenly your friend joins in on a whim frame and spoil your photo. The result? Ruined a good portrait that should have been uploaded to social media.

Nah, photo bomb This kind of thing doesn’t just happen to humans, you know, planet Earth has experienced it too. As NASA shared, a high-quality photo of Earth taken on June 10, 2021.

The portrait was captured using the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) camera mounted on the Deep Space Climate Observatory Satellite (DSCOVR). The aim of this image is to monitor factors such as the planet’s vegetation, cloud height, and ozone. However, there is something odd about the picture.

A round, pitch-black shadow appears above the Earth, right at the North Pole. Not a smudge on the screen or a photographer’s thumb accidentally touching the lens, but the Moon photo bomb.

When the photo was taken, the Earth was experiencing a solar eclipse so the Moon’s shadow finally entered the image.

“Taking pictures of the sunlit half of the Earth from four times farther from orbit never ceases to surprise us,” said DSCOVR NASA Project Scientist, Dr. Adam Szabo. According to him, at that time the Moon happened to enter the field of view or the Moon cast a shadow on Earth.

As we know, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth so that the Moon’s shadow is projected onto the Earth’s surface. In a total solar eclipse, the Moon will completely block the sun.

Meanwhile, during an annular solar eclipse, such as the one on June 10, the Moon is near its furthest point from Earth and appears smaller than the Sun. When the two are aligned, the Sun appears as a ring of fire around the dark disk of the moon. Incidentally, this phenomenon was captured by the EPIC camera so that we can finally see photo bomb which the Moon did.

It turns out that this is not the first time the Moon has appeared in a photo of Earth. The fifth largest satellite in the Solar System has disturbed the portrait of Earth several times. In fact, this has been happening since 2015.

When the Moon’s occlusion is visible next to Earth, the farthest part of the Moon that can’t be seen from Earth appears on camera, or when the Moon’s silhouette is visible in Asia. (sam)
