Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday (20/7/2021) has asked the United States (US) to fulfill important “conditions”. This includes financial, logistical and diplomatic support, so that Turkey can run and maintain Kabul airport after other foreign forces withdraw from Afghanistan.
Turkey has offered to deploy troops to the airport after NATO fully pulled out and has been in talks with the US for several weeks.

Erdogan and US President Joe Biden discussed the issue in their first face-to-face meeting on the sidelines of a NATO summit in June. But the Taliban, who had gained territory when US-led foreign troops withdrew, have warned Turkey against it.
Erdogan, speaking in a televised address on Tuesday (20/7/2021) from Northern Cyprus, acknowledged that the Taliban had reservations but said Turkey would continue to carry out the mission as long as the US, a NATO partner, met three of Turkey’s specific requirements. Conditions are US support in diplomatic relations, delivery of logistical facilities, and financial and administrative support.
“If these conditions can be met, we are thinking about taking over the management of Kabul airport,” he said Al Jazeera, Wednesday (21/7/201).
“There will be serious financial and administrative difficulties … (the United States) will provide necessary support to Turkey in this regard as well,” Erdogan added, after attending dawn prayers during the Eid al-Adha holiday.
Turkey hopes the airport mission will help calm tense US relations in several areas including the purchase of Russia’s S-400 missile defense.
“The Taliban, which is holding some talks with America, should be able to talk about this issue with Turkey more comfortably,” Erdogan said, adding that he believed an agreement could be reached.
Resul Serdar from Al Jazeera said that securing the operation of Kabul airport is very important as it is the only gateway for the international community.
“Turkey wants to keep it international for fear of the scenario being left behind once the international community exits the country, and confronts the Taliban,” he said, speaking from Istanbul.
