Several shots were fired shortly after 8 p.m. A large-scale police operation continues after the shooting, reports the Austrian public broadcaster ORF.
Police have confirmed that several people armed with rifles are suspected. Six shooting sites have also been identified. Initially ashooting took place at the Vienna Synagogue, in the center of Vienna on the Danube.
Police officers have shot one suspect. Several people were injured, including one police officer.
“I can now confirm that we believe this is a terrorist attack,” Interior Minister Karl Nehammers told the Austrian broadcaster ORF.
Police have indicated that people avoid the city center and public places or public transport, while urging social media users not to share photos or videos taken at the scene.
The incident took place just hours before the planned restrictions on Covid-19 in Austria.
