There is no getting around hydrogen technology

Neulußheim/Region.“I would like to use the month during the dark doldrums to initiate a discussion on the energy supply of the future,” said CDU Landtag candidate Andreas Sturm at the beginning of an online event on the subject of energy supply, as stated in a press release.

The dark doldrums are considered to be the state in which little renewable energy is produced due to little sun and wind. As an expert, Christian Mildenberger, managing director of the state association “Renewable Energies” NRW, spoke about the greatest challenges of a clean and secure energy supply.

According to Mildenberger, a successful energy supply must cover the dark doldrums and absorb the peaks in energy consumption. For example, an electric car could be charged at night if there was enough electricity from wind turbines with low consumption. To do this, one must above all rely on advances through digitization, there are already electrical household appliances such as dryers that are started by smart home systems if enough photovoltaic power is available.

The dark doldrums are a great challenge, but Andreas Sturm is optimistic that intelligent solutions will lead to success. As examples from his constituency, Sturm cited the Hockenheimer solar association “Solardrom”, which tirelessly promotes the expansion of PV systems. In this context, Sturm reported on the visit to the Neulußheim solar company SO.LE, where he found out more about cloud storage technology with Solardrom chairman Michael Schöllkopf. PV producers can now temporarily store their self-generated electricity in a cloud and access it in winter.

Smart solutions are required

Christian Mildenberger emphasized the need for hydrogen technology in order to convert regeneratively generated electricity and make it usable at a later point in time. This technology is already being used in heating systems in private houses and then Andreas Sturm told of a dissertation project at the hydrogen research center in Eppelheim, which, among other things, is researching the use of hydrogen in private households (we reported on January 13).

The online discussion was broadcast live directly on Facebook and viewers from the Facebook community asked questions as did the panellists on Zoom on topics such as nuclear fusion technology, fuel cells, synthetic fuels or a comeback of nuclear power. A comeback of nuclear energy was rejected by both Andreas Sturm and Christian Mildenberger: too expensive, too inflexible, too controversial.

Discuss openly

Landtag candidate Andreas Sturm campaigned for Germany to become the future market for renewable energies through innovative energy production, so that regenerative forms of energy would not destroy jobs but create new ones. At the end, Andreas Sturm and Christian Mildenberger spoke unanimously about the fact that ideologies inhibited development because they are not open-ended and a future-oriented energy supply needs technology-openness. zg
