The Social and Labor Affairs Commission of the Saeima has supported the amendments to the Law on the Circulation of Alcoholic Beverages, which envisages the introduction of new restrictions on the sale of alcohol – from Monday to Saturday it can be sold from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays – from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. , whether such changes could achieve the desired results and significantly reduce alcohol consumption in the country.
Alcohol has been a “sacred cow” in Latvia for a long time, so these amendments are more like an imitation of the activity. Why not take an example from, for example, Sweden, where alcohol is only allowed to be sold in specialized stores, but on Sundays it is completely prohibited? Probably because Latvians like to drink, but presenting such an idea to their electorate would be political suicide.
