The World Cup in Downhill Skiing 2023/24: Organizers and Athletes Face Unexpected Challenges

In less than two weeks, the carousel of the World Cup in downhill skiing 2023/24 will be in full swing again. The organizers of the giant slalom in Sölden and Petra Vlhová are still fighting with unexpected opponents.

After last year’s canceled race on the Rettenbach glacier, the organizers proceeded with a radical change of the slope, on which the new season will open on the last weekend of October.

With the help of heavy construction machines, they leveled the “piste”, and a vigorous intervention in nature gave the organizers a little more room for maneuver when creating a traditional ski overture.

Thanks to this, the Austrians saved enough snow, which will come in handy in the very warm weather prevailing in Europe.

Although Sölden is struggling with high temperatures again, last year the race was canceled and later replaced in Semmering due to a huge amount of snow.

“What happened in Sölden was a big attack on nature. The International Ski Federation wants to fight against it, and so do we, the racers.

I’m glad that I became one of the voices of the still disjointed group that will try to make sure that our children’s children will also see the winter and the World Cup,” Slovak representative Andreas Žampa said at today’s press conference.

Kidnapped Jančová

He is also about to jump into the competitive carousel with his brother Adam. Both believe that in time the youngest Teo will join them, but he has to improve his position in the world ranking.

The young Rebeka Jančová, who spent the training in Argentina with Petra Vlhová, will not be missing either.

“She offered herself. I really appreciate that he wants to pass something on. It’s incredible how professional Petra and her coach Mauro Pini are. It was great,” Rebeka Jančová admitted to Pravda.

While the 20-year-old talent will fight hard to advance to the second round, Vlhová would like to fight for the top ranks. Even though…

“Unfortunately, at this moment, we also have to deal with complications related to the deteriorating state of health.

We all know very well that people are more susceptible to various diseases in October or November. Well, Petra is currently one of those who has been affected by something similar.

Although we believe it is nothing serious, I have to say that she has not been 100% healthy for the last few days.

Due to a severe sore throat, we will need a few more days to be able to return to the ski slope together and to the full training load,” said Pini.

Tickets to Jasna sell out quickly

The Swiss coach, on the other hand, is very much looking forward to the home race in Jasná (January 20 and 21). With Vlhová, as a member of her implementation team, he will experience it for the first time.

“Everyone in our team is very happy that Jasná is in the race program for the following season.

It’s great that fans are already buying tickets for this event in advance. It is a huge motivation and encouragement for us, we are all very much looking forward to Jasna,” added Pini.

The organizers are enjoying great interest. The director of the race, Jana Palovičová, admitted that there were not many left of the twelve thousand tickets.

“Half of the tickets disappeared on the first day, two-thirds in total in the following days. Currently, until December, the technical approval processes by the FIS are ongoing for all exits from the race, which will be seen by viewers around the world via broadcast cameras.

Advertising areas, their visuals and placement also have exact rules. All important sites such as mobile measurement cells, camera towers, commentator positions and other areas must be ready before the first snow falls.

At the same time, materials that serve to prepare the track, such as safety nets, inflatable mattresses at the finish line, are being ordered in full flow,” Palovičová clarified.
