Paul Jambers (77) has made hundreds of reports, but none are more famous than his portrayal of the farmer Charel. In an episode about lonely peasants, Jambers visited the loner in his backyard in Lotenhulle and what he found belonged to collective memory in the blink of an eye. Charel lived on her parents’ farm, where she didn’t seem to have changed since her birth in 1930. Unforgettable are the images of a 65-year-old farmer cooking eggs in a pan while his cats eat them or laughing through his teeth when talking about his. great love, which his father did not allow him to marry.

Charel, born Karel Declerck, died in 2013, but in his latest “Jambers back to the 90s” the journalist returns for a conversation with his widow Vera Schouppe (59). He has provided him with unedited images from his personal archive showing, among other things, his last days in the hospital. The talkative smiley face was so weak that he can barely frown. “He died while I was holding him,” Vera tells Jambers. “I still think about him very often.”
