WASHINGTON – The West does not have the stockpile of weapons needed to sustain a protracted military campaign in Ukraine or elsewhere.

The statement was made by the CEO of one of the Pentagon’s main defense contractors.

“Therefore, the military-industrial complex needs clear demand signals from Western governments about what exactly to produce and whether to buy,” Kathy Warden told the Financial Times in an interview published on Sunday (17/7/2022).

“The most important thing now is to get clear demand signals about ongoing commitments and the extent of drawdowns from those stocks,” he said.

He explained, “The existing stockpile of weapons is not designed for prolonged conflict. However, the West has not run out of weapons for Ukraine.”

“I wouldn’t say I’ve heard of us running out, but if you project forward that we’re going to want to maintain this level of commitment for a few more years, that’s certainly not what anyone has made to accommodate.

The Pentagon’s top contractors meet several times a week to discuss efforts to supply Ukraine.
“Dialogue with the Pentagon is good and further discussions are ongoing about getting clarity on their plans,” Warden said.

“They have done their best to bring the industry together and share the plan, both on a more general and specific level, so that we can go beyond contracts and make investments and progress,” he said.
