32 hours after his resignation Jürgen Klinsmann explains the sudden end at Hertha Berlin on Facebook. The 55-year-old admits mistakes, but also defends himself.
Jürgen Klinsmann sits with a serious eye on a silver laptop. In a 13-minute monologue, the former national coach apologized to the fans of Hertha BSC in front of an internet camera for the circumstances of his sudden departure: «The way is of course questionable and open to criticism. Whenever you send a negative message, it won’t come across well. If that was the case, I would also like to apologize for this, »says the German in a video chat about his resignation as head coach after only eleven weeks.
Klinsmann admits mistakes. «Maybe I should have given myself more time and talked more to the Hertha management to work through the whole thing again. Then maybe this action would not have happened – although it was simply a process that has been going on in me for weeks. »
No clear division of competences
Klinsmann tells how he really enjoyed himself after his enthusiastic start in Berlin. Therefore, he informed the club management in January in the training camp in Florida that he could imagine staying longer at Hertha. However, no agreement is reached. “I am still in a contractless state to this day. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to develop a contract with a precise separation of duties, “says Klinsmann, adding:” It has nothing to do with money at all. Money was never an issue. »
Rather, it failed to determine a clear division of competencies. “This primarily affects me and also Michael Preetz,” Klinsmann clarifies. He himself is not used to having a manager sitting on the bench on the edge of the field and getting involved. «It struck me unbelievably that the manager always sits there and gives his comments to the players or the referee. (…) It’s different in Germany. There is a structure in which the entire management level has a say. But in the end only one can make a decision – in my discretion that must be the coach. »
«Unfortunately we wore ourselves out there»
However, Preetz did not share this opinion. “Unfortunately, we wore ourselves out in many small side war theaters over the past nine weeks,” says Klinsmann. After all, the moments after the defeat in Mainz finally made the barrel overflow. «Then I hardly slept the night and then walked in early in the morning. And then I’m just a guy who can no longer stop at himself. »
Klinsmann rates his work at Hertha as positive, and he has also left no chaos: “The club is going in the right direction.” On Thursday, sports director Preetz, investor Lars Windhorst and club president Werner Gegenbauer also want to speak at a press conference.
