History of the US Open Championship

This is the 123rd US Open Championship, first held in 1895 and with two resp. four-year hiatus during World War I and World War II.

The youngest US Open champion is 19-year-old John McDermott, who triumphed in 1911; he is one of nine players aged 21 and under to win the US Open. The oldest winner is Hale Irwin at 45, who played on a special permit in 1990 when he won his third title after 1974 and 1979.

There are four four-time US Open winners: Willie Anderson (1901, 1903, 1904, 1905), amateur Bob Jones (1923, 1926, 1929, 1930), Ben Hogan (1948, 1950, 1951, 1953) and Jack Nicklaus (1962 , 1967, 1972, 1980).

Only six players have won the Masters and the US Open in the same year: Craig Wood (1941), Ben Hogan (1951, 1953), Arnold Palmer (1960), Jack Nicklaus (1972), Tiger Woods (2002) and Jordan Spieth ( 2015).

PUMA Golf celebrates the ultimate endurance test in golf with exclusive styles

The US Open is traditionally an endurance test for the professionals and once again inspired PUMA Golf to create a collection that many amateurs can identify with. Because who doesn’t know it – the love-hate relationship with golf? Stylishly implemented in the design with the hearts and snowmen. Because birdies are welcome and snowmen should be avoided. The snowman stands for the score 8 and neither a professional nor an amateur wants to write it down on the scorecard.

The club officially opened on May 30, 1911 on the outskirts of Beverly Hills. Its stately clubhouse, tennis courts and golf courses have served as the club’s home ever since.

In the late 1920’s, legendary golf course architect and club member George C. Thomas Jr. redesigned what would later be described as his greatest achievement. In 2010, the North Square was restored after a five-year project led by well-known architect Gil Hanse.

In March 2015, the club began a 16-month renovation of the historic 106-year-old clubhouse to restore it to its original glory. Reopening in August 2016, the Reagan Terrace was rededicated in honor of Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States and a member of the Los Angeles Country Club.

Die Championship Trophy

The original two-handled cup was destroyed in a September 1946 fire at Club Tam O’Shanter outside Chicago. The USGA considered replacing it with a new design, but decided to maintain the look of the original with a scale replica. This replica remained in use and passed from champion to champion until 1986, when it was finally transferred to the USGA Golf Museum.

Today, the winner of the US Open receives the faithful replica of 1986. The original US Open Trophy is on display at the USGA Golf Museum in Liberty Corner, NJ.
