Pompeo said the President of the United States Donalds Tramps has issued an order that will be “a new and powerful tool for enforcing the UN arms embargo”.
Minister of Finance Steve Mnuchin, who also attended the press conference, announced the sanctions that will be imposed on the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.
The Trump administration says it maintains the UN arms embargo, which Iran has violated, including by organizing attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities.
But Washington is referring to a resolution in support of the nuclear deal reached with Tehran by Trump’s predecessor, the White House Barack Obama, in 2015 along with leaders of other major powers.
Trump announced with great pomp in 2018 that the United States was withdrawing from the agreement, but at the same time insisted that the United States remained a “member” of the treaty within the meaning of the 2015 resolution.
However, almost all UN Security Council members, including Washington allies, have rejected this legal case.
