The US Government hopes to donate vaccines against Covid-19 to Mexico

The United States government is preparing to donate COVID-19 vaccines to Mexico from the pharmaceutical companies Moderna Inc. and AstraZeneca Plc. in the coming days, under the cooperation framework of both countries and to reinforce the National Vaccination Plan in our country against the pandemic, according to reports from people familiar with the discussions, received by the Bloomberg agency.

The donation of vaccine doses will be discussed in a phone call that will be held this Monday afternoon between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris.

In the morning, the Mexican president said that there will be three topics that will be discussed with the US vice president. He affirmed that migration, shipment of vaccines and the reopening of the border will be the topics that will be on the agenda during the conversation.

López Obrador detailed in his press conference two weeks ago that Mexico had a new offer for the donation of more vaccines from the United States after it requested 5 million vaccines in April.

According to Bloomberg, the Joe Biden Administration is working together with México and Moderna to obtain the legal and regulatory means for the donation, which is expected to take place in the coming days.

Mexico received 2.9 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from the United States in early July.

Along with Argentina, Mexico produces locally 250 million doses of the vaccine to export to the rest of Latin America with the support of the businessman Carlos Slim’s foundation.

Although the first doses were expected in the first quarter of the year, there were production and certification delays and the first batch was shipped in June.
