The United States wants to believe in a rapid resumption of negotiations with Iran

The United States hopes to achieve an early resumption of negotiations with Iran to revive the nuclear deal.

The United States hopes to “return soon enough” to the negotiating table with Iran to revive the nuclear deal, a senior official in the Biden administration said on Monday after similar statements by Tehran.

“We hope that we can return to Vienna fairly quickly,” where these discussions are taking place, “and then we will see what their intentions are,” said, in a telephone interview with reporters, the official who asked for the anonymity.

Regarding the United States and Israel, he said: “we share the same observation on the way in which the Iranian nuclear program has very strongly exceeded the limits”.

Speaking on the eve of the visit to Washington by the Israeli national security adviser, he was particularly concerned about Iran’s accumulation of enriched uranium.

Unilateral American withdrawal in 2018

Mentioning the “breakout time”, that is to say the time it would take in theory for Iran to obtain the material intended for a nuclear bomb, the senior American official estimated that it had “passed from twelve months to a few months “, which is” worrying “.

Washington nevertheless continues to “believe very strongly that the diplomatic channel remains the best to resolve this problem,” said the senior official.

Tehran announced on Friday that it was considering a resumption before the beginning of November of negotiations with the major powers with a view to relaunching the nuclear agreement, suspended since June.

Concluded in 2015 between Iran on the one hand and the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, France and Germany on the other, the agreement offered Iran the lifting of ‘part of Western and UN sanctions in exchange for its commitment never to acquire atomic weapons and a drastic reduction in its nuclear program, placed under strict UN control.

But after the unilateral withdrawal of the Americans from the agreement in 2018 under President Donald Trump, Tehran gradually abandoned most of its commitments.
