The United States officially withdraws from the Paris Climate Agreement / Article / LSM.lv

The United States officially withdrew from the UN climate agreement in Paris on Wednesday.

The agreement aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions so that global temperatures do not rise by more than two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times.

US President Donald Trump for withdrawal the Paris Climate Agreement was announced back in 2017, stating that it required US companies and governments to comply with unfair environmental standards and threatened the United States economy.

In November last year, the United States officially informed the UN of its decision, but according to the procedure, the withdrawal came into force a year later.

Paris Climate Agreement Paris Agreement was prepared on 12 December 2015 in Paris, at the 21st Climate Change Conference, but signed on 22 April 2016. At the time, the US president was Barack Obama.

The United States, the world’s largest economy and the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China, is the first country to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

This decision puts the Trump administration at odds with all its allies and most competitors on climate change.

If Trump is re-elected president, the United States is likely to stay out of international efforts to slow down climate change for the next four years.

Republican Trump’s rival, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, has vowed to get the United States back among the members of the Paris climate agreement.
