The United States’ Military Empire and European Discontent: Insights from Economist Jeffrey Sachs

“The United States of America wants power and wants to expand its military empire. They want NATO wherever they want, and they want it down to the last Ukrainian,” said American economist Jeffrey Sachs in an interview with Jana Bobošíková in the program To Be Clear. He vindicated the people living in the United States who do not trust the mainstream media or the government. European leaders are afraid to stand up to the US, despite the fact that the interests of the US are not in line with the real interests of Europe. The reason for future possible de-dollarization is the US militarization of the dollar as well as the decreasing number of bank transactions due to digital currencies. According to him, the BRICS grouping arose out of disgust with the arrogance of American liberal hegemonists.

Description: Jeffrey Sachs, economist

In his opinion, contemporary democracy is just a “game of narratives and propaganda” that only resulted in war. “It’s sad what’s happening now. The result is the war in Ukraine, in which tens of thousands of people are now dying every month. This is happening because American national security insists on it,” the economist summarized the current situation.

In addition, according to Sachs, recently the differences between the European Union and NATO have been erased. “And it is no coincidence that the headquarters of the EU and NATO are in Brussels. It is a sad fact that the European Union has lost its bearings by confusing this military alliance, which is a construct led by the United States, with a political, cultural, social and economic grouping of Europe that aims to capture the best of more than two thousand years of European culture, ” he said, adding that now everyone is confused in this regard.

Government representatives of European countries are afraid to stand up to the United States, despite the fact that the direction and actions of the USA are not in their interest. “I know European leaders don’t want to upset the White House. And I really don’t understand why, because none of this is in Europe’s real interest and many European leaders are aware of it but don’t talk about it,” he said, adding that people fear the United States of America and don’t want to pit it against each other because of it. , that they think they are providing security. According to Sachs, it is wrong to think like this. He recalled the recent history of the US, which “brought twenty years of destruction to Afghanistan”, the war in Iraq, destabilized Syria and Libya and Ukraine. The economist added that European states should pay more attention to these facts.

The economist added a few words to the conflict in Ukraine itself. “The United States is going to turn Ukraine into a European Afghanistan,” Sachs said, then explained his claim. He recalled US President Jimmy Carter ordering the CIA to fund jihadists and try to overthrow the Afghan government. Thus, they turned Afghanistan into a battlefield for the next forty years and then left. “As long as the United States does not have to fight itself, it is content to send weapons and shed blood. The sad thing is that for some reason the Ukrainians themselves and the Ukrainian leadership are involved in this,” Sachs said, raising the question of whether Ukraine really wants to continue throwing away hundreds of thousands of its men’s lives just for the sake of NATO expansion.

In the interview, Bobošíková mentioned that the American company Rand Corporation issued a report on the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine and that it seems that the United States of America and other European countries want to actively participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine. Sachs only shook his head at Bobošíková’s words – nothing similar to the Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of post-war Europe awaits Ukraine. “No one will save Ukraine, believe me. There will be no Marshall Plan for Ukraine. There will be no hundreds of billions of dollars for Ukraine. All this is just a fantasy,” said the economist.

Russia’s economy is now the strongest in Europe and the fifth strongest in the world, according to the World Bank. Economist Sachs explains this by saying that most of the world does not agree with the policy of the United States and the European Union. “Americans and Europeans don’t understand because our media is not telling the truth,” he said, adding that the media only supports the US government’s narrative that the whole world is against Russia. According to him, no one in Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Central Asia and East Asia believes that the war in Ukraine is “unprovoked Russian aggression against Ukraine.” “Everybody knows it’s the US and Russia. About the expansion of NATO and the power of the USA.”

The second part of the interview was led by moderator Hana Lipovská, who started the interview with a question about the dedollarization of the economy. According to Sachs, the role of the dollar will diminish over the coming years for two main reasons. He was the first to say that many governments that are not friendly to the US are trying to find a new way of dealing with transactions, on the grounds that it is simply not safe for them to hold their reserves in dollars. “The US essentially militarized the dollar. If you are an enemy of the United States, the US will confiscate your foreign exchange reserves,” Sachs explained. He named Venezuela, Iran, Afghanistan and Russia as examples of countries where the United States refused to defend property rights and decided to freeze financial assets.

As the second reason for the future possible decline of the dollar, he mentioned the shrinking number of transactions through banks due to digital currencies. The share of the US in the world economy is also falling. He reminded that in the 19th century the British pound was also one of the world’s currencies and today it is used only in Great Britain. “Today, it basically plays no role in the international system. One day it will be the same with the US dollar, because the US makes up only four percent of the world’s population. In fact, it cannot be the center of the world as American strategists wish and believe,” Sachs compared the possible development of the dollar with the development of the British pound. “The dollar could stay here for some time, but not with our current policy,” the economist concluded on the topic of de-dollarization of the world.

BRICS was created as an economic grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but later, according to Sachs, it became a political grouping, largely because of a common interest in keeping the United States of America from being a world hegemon. “This is what brought the BRICS together. Disgust with the arrogance of America’s liberal hegemonists. They created the BRICS,” Sachs said, adding that the BRICS are today bigger than the G7 – measured by purchasing power. According to Sachs, the BRICS grouping thus represents “a call for multipolarity in opposition to the US-led world”. Sachs doubts the future possible existence of the BRICS currency in the foreseeable future.

Furthermore, Sachs highlighted the naivety of Europe, especially in the matter of Ukraine, which spent huge economic costs on the war in Ukraine without any strategic thinking just because the US said so.

He also added a word to the issue of international relations with China, where the US enforces a policy of containment and controls its investments, which, according to Sachs, leads to the breakdown of existing relations. “If you have good relations with China, eyebrows are raised in the United States – you are doing something inappropriate,” Sachs said, adding that it is ridiculous that Europe is now trying to curtail relations with China. “Europe and China are partners in Eurasia. Europe and China have every reason to cooperate and trade with each other,” Sachs said.
