The United Nations General Assembly on Monday adopted a resolution supporting the creation of a mechanism to allow Russia to compensate for the damage to people and property caused by its invasion of Ukraine, reported Agence France-Presse.
The United Nations General Assembly voted 94 to 14 with 73 abstentions, well short of the 143 votes in favor of a resolution condemning Russia’s “illegal annexation” of Ukrainian territory on Oct. 12 . That resolution had only 5 votes against and 35 abstentions.
The non-binding resolution calls for the establishment of a structure for Russia to pay compensation for the war between Russia and Ukraine that began on February 24; Russia “must bear the legal consequences of all its internationally wrongful actions, including compensation for the injured, including those caused by such actions. any damages”. The United States estimates that more than 200,000 people have been killed or injured by Russia and Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
The resolution approved today was co-sponsored by Ukraine, Canada, the Netherlands and Guatemala. Countries objecting to the case include Russia, China, Cuba, Mali and Ethiopia.
As for the abstainers, in addition to many African countries, there are also Brazil, India and Israel.
