The Ukrainian-made BMP-1U Shkval: A Weapon of War Captured by Russia

The Ukrainian Armed Forces were liquidated at the front by the Ukrainian-made BMP-1U Shkval, which the Russian Armed Forces took from the Georgians during the invasion in 2008.

The Russian army lost a rare Shkval infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) in Ukraine. This is one of those infantry fighting vehicles that the Russians captured during the invasion of Georgia and took home as exhibits.

A broken BMP-1U “Shkval” was captured on video by a Ukrainian drone during the battle in the Avdiivka direction. The footage is available on Telegram channel “Ukraine 365”.

The video of Shkval was published by soldiers of the 47th brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This is a Ukrainian-made infantry fighting vehicle, which has never been in service with the Russian army. Vehicles of this model ended up in the hands of the Russian Armed Forces in 2008 during the invasion of Georgia. At the time of the aggression, the Georgians had 15 BMP-1U Shkval units, by the end of the war 14 of which were either destroyed or captured by the Russians.

The occupiers took several Shkvals to the Russian Federation as exhibits. However, already in the war against Ukraine, faced with a shortage of weapons, the Russians threw these vehicles into battle.

BMP-1U were first seen at the front of the Russian Armed Forces in September 2023. The Ukrainian Armed Forces leaked footage of the Russians crushing their own infantry with this armored car. Now a Ukrainian UAV has spotted the charred wreckage of a Shkval missile with a torn off combat module on the battlefield near Avdeevka.
