“The Ugliest Ever”; “Looks like auto parts”

Today at 17.00 at St. Peter, the nativity scene and the Christmas tree will be inaugurated. The 125-square-meter nativity scene with pottery figures is the work of artists from the small settlement of Castelli near Teramo, which has been an important center of this craft since the 16th century. The figures were made in the years 1965-1975. The nativity scene was previously exhibited in Rome, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Tel Aviv. Photos, to put it mildly, did not arouse enthusiasm. The nativity scene is even described as the ugliest in history.

Nativity scene in the Vatican

The Nativity Scene of Castelli, which was erected in St. Peter consists of ceramic figures larger than natural human figures. In St. Peter, only some of the figures from the 54 collection will be shown. They present the scene of the birth of the Lord Jesus, and above the Holy Family – an Angel with outstretched wings, who protects it. There will also be the Three Kings, a piper, a shepherdess with a jug, a pan flute player, and even a girl with a doll.

The figures are built of annular modules, superimposed on each other and forming cylindrical busts. In the nativity scene, you can find references to ancient, Greek and Sumerian art, as well as to ancient Egyptian sculptures.

Comments

The nativity scene did not appeal to Internet users. We are used to and expect more traditional figures of St. Families. This stable caused great emotions.

This year’s Christmas crib is being built in the Vatican. In my opinion, it is the ugliest stable in the history of those who embellish (delete) disfigure St. Peter.

Does this creature bring Christmas joy?

Nursery in St. Peter’s Square.

Why is the Vatican nativity scene so ugly?

It looks like some car parts, children’s toys and an astronaut.
